In 1961, a woman described a terrifying UFO encounter in New Hampshire: Her drawing from the incident was later linked to real star system by an astronomer

For decades, UFO stories have been filled with strange lights, unexplained sightings and claims of encounters with beings from other worlds. But one case from the early 1960s became especially influential because it introduced several details that would later become familiar in alien-abduction stories; missing time, humanoid beings, medical examinations and memories recovered under hypnosis. The story began with an American couple's late-night drive through New Hampshire in 1961 and eventually led to one of the most debated claims in UFO history: a woman's drawing that an amateur astronomer later said resembled a real star system.

In September 1961, Betty and Barney Hill were driving home to Portsmouth, New Hampshire, after a trip to Canada when they noticed a strange light moving across the sky. What they initially believed was an unusual sighting later turned into a much more disturbing account, after the couple said they could not explain several hours of their journey.

Years later, Betty's account produced another mystery. During hypnosis, she recalled being shown what she believed was a map of stars aboard the alleged spacecraft. She eventually drew the pattern she remembered. Amateur astronomer Marjorie Fish later studied that drawing and said it matched the Zeta Reticuli star system, around 39 light-years from Earth.

The night that changed the Hills' lives

According to accounts documented by the Boston Public Library, Betty and Barney Hill were travelling along US Route 3 in New Hampshire with their dog, Delsey, on September 19, 1961, when Betty spotted a bright object in the sky. Barney initially thought it might be a satellite, but the couple stopped to watch it through binoculars. Near Cannon Mountain, Barney said the object appeared to be a large disc with lights around it and figures inside, prompting the couple to drive away.

As they continued, the Hills reported hearing a strange beeping sound and feeling vibrations, while Delsey became distressed. They later said they could not remember part of the journey. When they reached home after 5 a.m., they believed they should have arrived much earlier. Their watches had stopped working, and Barney's binocular strap was found cut.

Betty and Barney sought an explanation

The couple initially kept much of the experience private. Betty, however, contacted Pease Air Force Base and reported the strange object soon after the incident.

According to the Boston Public Library's account, other people had also reported seeing something unusual in the sky that night, while an Air Force radar operator reportedly noticed a disturbance around the same period. The Hills therefore believed that officials might be able to explain what they had seen. Instead, the mystery followed them.


Betty began experiencing vivid nightmares about the incident. Barney later struggled with anxiety and health problems. Eventually, the couple sought professional help.

In December 1963, they began seeing Boston psychiatrist Dr Benjamin Simon. He worked with them separately using hypnosis, with the sessions recorded so their accounts would not influence one another. The sessions produced much more detailed memories.

The memories under hypnosis

During hypnosis, Barney described humanoid figures with large heads and unusual eyes. He recalled being taken aboard the object and undergoing a medical examination. At one point during a session, Barney became extremely distressed as he described the figures and their eyes.

Betty also recalled being taken aboard the spacecraft. She described a medical examination and said one of the beings used a long needle during the procedure. She later recalled asking the apparent leader where they came from. According to her account, he showed her a map.

The strange map Betty remembered

Betty said the leader showed her a map with stars connected by lines, which she understood as indicating where the beings came from. She later recreated the map in a drawing that became known as the Hill case's “star map”. Years later, amateur astronomer Marjorie Fish studied the sketch, building three-dimensional models of nearby stars and comparing different viewing angles to find a similar pattern.

The Boston Public Library notes that Fish eventually concluded that the drawing appeared to correspond to stars around Zeta Reticuli, a binary star system in the constellation Reticulum. The Boston Public Library notes that Fish identified it as a possible map of Zeta Reticuli, roughly 39 light-years from Earth. The interpretation became a major part of the UFO story, although it did not establish that the Hills had visited the system or encountered extraterrestrial beings.

Why the star-map claim remains disputed

The Zeta Reticuli interpretation has never been accepted as scientific proof of an alien encounter.

One issue is that Fish's interpretation depended on matching the pattern in Betty's drawing to a particular arrangement of stars. Later researchers questioned whether the proposed stellar configuration remained convincing when more accurate astronomical data and different assumptions were used.

There is also the larger question of how Betty's drawing was produced in the first place.

The memories about the alleged abduction emerged during hypnosis. Dr Simon did not conclude that extraterrestrials had abducted the Hills. Hypnosis can also make people more susceptible to suggestion and can contribute to the creation or alteration of memories.

That means the recovered memories cannot by themselves establish that the events happened exactly as remembered.

A case that changed UFO stories

Despite those questions, the Hill case had an enormous influence on popular culture.

The Boston Public Library describes the couple's story as one of the earliest and best-known American alien-abduction accounts. Their story helped establish elements that later became common in UFO fiction and television, including missing periods of time, humanoid aliens, examinations and large, unusual eyes.

The case also attracted attention because Betty and Barney were an interracial couple living in the United States during the civil rights era. Both were involved in civil rights activities, with Barney active in the New Hampshire NAACP and Betty working as a social worker.

Historian Matthew Bowman later examined the case through that social and racial context in his book The Abduction of Betty and Barney Hill: Alien Encounters, Civil Rights, and the New Age in America. Yale University Press describes the book as an examination of the Hills' lives and the wider American culture surrounding their experience.

CNN also reported on the argument that the story can be viewed through the racial tensions of the period, rather than only as a UFO account. That interpretation remains part of the broader historical discussion around the Hills.

The couple themselves continued to stand by their experience. Barney died in 1969, while Betty continued discussing the alleged abduction until her death in 2004.

More than six decades later, there is still no agreed explanation for what the Hills saw on that New Hampshire road or for the missing period they described. The drawing attributed to Betty is similarly open to interpretation.
