In 1920s, a sedimentary basin in Texas was denounced as a 'graveyard'. 100 years later, it generates $100 billion and 800,000 jobs across America
With over 43% of the nation's oil production and billions of dollars in revenue, the Permian Basin in Texas is currently the largest oil-producing region in the United States. The basin was originally written off as a desolate "graveyard," but its...

Because it contains some of the thickest rock layers in the world from the Permian geologic epoch—the last stage of the Paleozoic era—it is named after that time.
From ‘Graveyard’ To Billion Dollar Basin
According to an article published on Environment Texas, the first Permian Basin freshwater wells were dug in 1855, and modest amounts of crude oil were extracted slowly and with great difficulty. Before the Santa Rita #1 well was found and drilled in 1923, the region was regarded by oil and gas entrepreneurs as a "graveyard" due to a lack of efficient technology. The Permian Basin's discovery, exploitation, and redevelopment were all made possible by ever-improving drilling technology.Recent developments in horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing have drastically expanded output and production, causing enormous environmental pollution. An output of 5.7 million barrels of crude oil per day, according to the most recent data gathered in March 2023, has been rising annually since 2010. The Energy Information Administration reports that there were 4,524 new horizontal wells in 2021 compared to 350 in 2010.
According to a 2022 report from The Perryman Group and the Permian Strategic Partnership, the basin is expected to contribute up to $260 billion in gross product and generate more than 1,000,000 jobs.
As per a 2024 article published in World Oil, the Permian Basin is an economic powerhouse, generating $100 million across the country and more than 800,000 jobs. Over $18.2 billion in taxes are collected across Texas and New Mexico associated with Permian Basin activity.
