IITian struggles for job after getting laid off, wonders if MBBS would have been a better choice: 'At least doctors can earn something'

An IIT graduate recently bemoaned how the IT sector have been endangered with the advent of AI and expressed his jealousy for those in the medical field. Taking to the subreddit BTechtards, a Reddit user lamented how big tech companies are routinely laying off employees after investing in AI. He too was laid off from one such company two months ago and have not been able to get into a job despite stunning recommendations. He then wrote how medical field was comparatively more secure and stable field. He admitted he was jealous of how doctors seem to have more job security and earn big once they have established themselves as practitioners.

“A doctor cannot be unemployed at least he can earn anything and after years of experience he can earn 5-6 LPM easily or even more
I have seen how many doctors in my nearby hospital parking plot in Bombay have BMW X7 Mercedes GLS Audi RS5 and even a Porsche 911..” he wrote.


He then admitted that the process of getting a medical degree is undoubtedly arduous, but the payoffs are very high and lucrative. In comparison, tech is oversaturated, a lot of engineering graduates are unemployed and many have to start with a low salary of Rs 3.5 lakh per year.

He then concluded: “In India 83% btech Grads are jobless and most remaining people start from 3.5 LPA. Unless you are from IIT NIT IIIT it's different story. Even average MBBS grad earn more than this

One commenter broke his rose-coloured image of the medical field and pointed out that to truly break into the highest-paying jobs, doctors need a specialization, and the field is also highly competitive. “So many doctors are also unemployed…random sa clinic khol logo what's guarantee ki patients ayege? To get tie up with good hospital you'll defo need specialization, even mbbs karna hai neet ka competition dekho lol, ye sub se bakwas sub nhi dekha everyone is js here to fear mongering..” the comment read.

Another comementer, who hailed from a family of doctors gave a frills-free view of the profession: “Honestly speaking ,from a family of doctors, it pays good there are many conditions to it

If you are in tier 1 city ,you have an advantage, in tier 2 ,you don't get paid enough then also if you are working in govt and private that also matters

The working hours are insane I have seen my family working 80+ hours a week ,plus not having time for anything ,and the cars you are talking about ,only less than 1% of doctors have it even after working for more than 30 years So ,No it not a safe field ig anymore as the competition each year is rising..”
