IIM graduate’s family demands Rs 7 crore in wedding expenses from bride’s parents: ‘Go look at yourself in the mirror…’
After claiming that the family of an IIM graduate demanded a sizable sum of money from the relatives of a potential bride as a condition of marriage, a woman started a conversation on Instagram.

A woman has sparked a discussion on Instagram after alleging that the family of an IIM graduate sought an enormous amount of money from a prospective bride’s relatives.
Sharing her friend’s experience, she said, "I want to know this, especially from the guys, like, where is this audacity coming from?" She added, "Not even about the money; it’s the audacity to demand someone spend something on your wedding."
She said that degrees from prestigious institutions were useless if it did not keep people from having regressive practices. She lamented how India’s marriage market favours men, but many men overestimate themselves. “All of these 2 out of 10 men and their families demanding just anything is baffling to me. Like go look at yourself in the mirror,” she wrote.
After she posted the video, it garnered a lot of attention and generated a range of responses. While some questioned why brides' families still favoured potential husbands with prominent degrees and high wages, others noted that such expectations were illegal and unfairly burdened the bride's family.
One social media user questioned why, instead of putting affection first, women continued to look for well-compensated IIM graduates as marriage partners despite having their own education and occupations. Men and women have the right to make their own choices and preferences, the commentator said.
Another remarked that the desi marriage market is brutal. Women select men on the basis of their salary and qualifications, while men select based on youth and beauty.
