Idol of the champions! Valderrama, Amunike, Desailly all grew up with Maradona as their role model

The international legends who were in Navi Mumbai picked the Argentinian footballer as their idol.

Idol of the champions! Valderrama, Amunike, Desailly all grew up with Maradona as their role model
As a player, Jorge Campos wore multicolour outfits inspired by the surfing culture of his hometown - Acapulco, Mexico. Last week, at the DY Patil stadium, the former Mexican goalie was in a plain white polo. As if that wasn't funny enough, he also said, "Who is Maradona?"

Of course, the 50-year-old Campos was joking. It was a tongue-in-cheek response to Maradona being named by Campos's illustrious compatriots - who sat beside him - as their childhood role model.

Campos, Carlos Valderrama, Fernando Morientes, Emmanuel Amunike and Marcel Desailly were in Navi Mumbai to play a five-a-side exhibition match against an Indian team. The game was to mark an upcoming international junior event in India. The international stars won 5-4, but not before a crackling two-goal performance by Ngangom Bala Devi, the livewire Indian women's player from Manipur.

Afterwards, the stars showered and dressed in identical white polos, looking like executives at a company golf event. And then they addressed a press conference. When asked who their idols were when they were juniors, three of the five named Maradona.

Valderrama, the Colombian midfielder remembered for his effortless skill and his frizzy yellow Tina Turner-style warbonnet, spoke in Spanish about Maradona and his exploits in "Mehico" (the 1986 Mexico World Cup). Tournament director Javier Ceppi translated his reply.

"Diego Maradona not only scored goals, but also organised his team," said Valderrama, the crown of his hair smaller but still intact, and sporting beads around his neck and wrists. "He also played in a tough era. It was not easy what he accomplished in Mexico."

Amunike, the winger who locked horns for Nigeria against Maradona's Argentina in the 1994 World Cup, said, "I first saw him in the 1986 World Cup. The day after he scored the famous solo goal against England, we played on the street and everyone wanted to be Maradona."

Desailly was the most successful player in the group, having won the World Cup and Euro Cup for France and Champions League titles with Marseille and Milan. Now the 49-year-old is a television analyst. He too named the ultimate No. 10 as an inspiration.

"There was a real history to Maradona," Desailly said. "Things were expected from him right from the time he was a child, like Neymar. He is a very important part of football."

Morientes, who won the Champions League with Real Madrid and was a feared striker for Spain, Liverpool and Monaco, looked up to the creative Dane Michael Laudrup in his formative years. "He was my idol. I liked everything about him," Morientes said.

Campos, rated by some as Mexico's best goalkeeper, was a fan of Dutch striker Marco van Basten. What? No goalkeeper? Campos, who was also known for his habit of charging out of goal and playing as striker, shook his head. And then the man who, apart from saving goals also scored 34 of them, said, "I'm a forward."

Three-time Wimbledon champ Boris Becker was declared bankrupt at a hearing in London on Wednesday. His attorneys had sought a one-month extension at the hearing, but Registrar Christine Derrett cited that there was no credible evidence to show that the German would be able to repay the “substantial” debt that dates back to October 2015.

He is not the only one to have gone bust. There are other legends from the sports arena who have had to face similar music.

Maradona, dubbed "El Pibe de Oro" or "the Golden Boy" by his legions of fans, is said to owe nearly $53 million. The debts stem from his years playing for Napoli from 1984-91. He played for a number of teams but is most famous for his time in Napoli, where he helped the club win two Serie A titles. He amassed a tax bill in the tens of millions of dollars, refusing to pay initially because he claimed that those taxes were the team's responsibility.

In 2006, Italian police confiscated two Rolex watches worth about $15,000 when Maradona showed up to play in a benefit match. In 2009, while at a weight loss clinic in Merano, he was met by Italian police who confiscated the earrings he was wearing; the three diamond earrings were estimated to be worth just under $6,000.

The hair, the headband, the epic Wimbledon battles with John McEnroe and Jimmy Connors: Swedish tennis legend Björn Rune Borg had one of the greatest, yet shortest, careers in professional tennis. Borg won his first Wimbledon at barely 20 years old. He would win a total of five titles on the grass at Wimbledon and six more in the French Open, all before retiring at the ripe old age of 26.

Three marriages and two divorces later, Borg narrowly missed declaring bankruptcy again in 1997, but has restored his wealth through a now-successful clothing and sportswear venture called simply Bjorn Borg. Impossibly, it doesn't sell headbands.

Former women's tennis great Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario says her parents have drained her of her $55 million wealth and left her struggling to pay off her debts. Sanchez-Vicario, a four-time grand slam singles winner and former world No.1. The right-handed player, who turned pro in 1985 and retired in 2002, won almost $US17 million ($15.8 million) in prize money, according to the Women's Tennis Association (WTA). The tennis star’s problems first came to light at the end of her professional career in 2003, when she was ordered to pay €5.2 million for tax fraud. In November 2012, Vicario began legal proceedings against her father Emilio, her brother Javier and two other ‘trusted’ people who managed her income, the lawyer Bonaventura Castellanos and the promoter Francisco de Paula. The four were accused of appropriating her €45 million fortune, through fraudulent administration, professional disloyalty and falsity. She only discovered the truth about how much she had earned through the tax office, and the revelation forced her to undergo ‘psychological and psychiatric’ treatments.
