Two identical twin sisters and the twin brothers they got married to finally decided to undertake plastic surgery because they couldn’t tell who was married to whom, reports Daily Mail. All four of them, that too. This elicited comments ranging from the wastefulness of all of them going under the knife, when just one woman and one man need to alter their appearance for all four of them to overcome their identity crisis, to ardent advocates of tattoos pitching for this less invasive method of attaining exclusivity. Someone promiscuously inclined wondered why anyone would want to tamper with this naturally ordained foursome. Yet another empathised with the difficulty in directing the question, “Am I less pretty than my sister?” to the right husband.

What these snipers seem to have overlooked is the sheer sense of empowerment this ability to alter one’s appearance endows on those choosing plastic surgery. Humans have always changed some part of their identity at will, by migration, by changing jobs, acquiring new skills, choosing a partner very different from oneself, changing religion, adopting a new name and so on. Michael Jackson changed his skin tone as well. Choosing how one wants to look is the next step in empowerment, at least for those who stop short of taking a selfie against the backdrop of parched earth.
