Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham remains one of Hindi cinema’s most celebrated family sagas, admired for its opulence, emotional depth, and larger-than-life narrative. The film brought together an extraordinary ensemble featuring Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Hrithik Roshan, and Kareena Kapoor, each delivering performances that left a lasting cultural imprint. Beyond its dramatic storytelling and memorable dialogues, the film stood out for its visual grandeur, which set new benchmarks for mainstream Bollywood productions.

The Song That Changed Everything

One of the most astonishing behind-the-scenes revelations about the film is that its originally planned budget was entirely consumed by the shooting of just one song, Bole Chudiyaan. This lavish musical sequence, now iconic, was also the very first set constructed for the movie. Its scale, complexity, and visual richness far exceeded initial expectations, turning the opening phase of the shoot into an unforgettable experience for everyone involved.

A Budget Written on Instinct

In a conversation with Radio Nasha, filmmaker Nikkhil Advani recalled how budgeting was far less clinical at the time. Unlike today’s detailed spreadsheets and prolonged financial planning, the process back then was driven more by instinct and passion. After the script was narrated to producer Yash Johar, Advani was asked to put a number on paper. He estimated a figure of Rs 3 crore, which was immediately sanctioned, and the team was instructed to begin work without delay.

Chaos, Creativity, and Cinematic Madness

The Bole Chudiyaan set quickly became a symbol of controlled chaos. With hundreds of dancers and junior artistes on set, logistical challenges mounted rapidly. Technical issues, costume problems, and sheer scale overwhelmed the crew. Even Karan Johar reportedly collapsed on set under the pressure. Custom-made jhoomars were created to enhance the royal aesthetic, as nothing less than extravagance would suffice for the vision Karan had in mind.

Yash Johar’s Defining Moment

By the end of that exhausting day, Yash Johar gathered the team for tea and questioned whether a budget had been prepared. When reminded of the Rs 3 crore estimate, he revealed that the single set had already exceeded that amount. In a decisive and symbolic gesture, he tore up the budget sheet and encouraged the filmmakers to focus solely on making the film without financial fear.

Longing for a Lost Era

Reflecting on that time, Nikkhil Advani expressed how filmmaking once carried an intoxicating passion. Producers like Yash Johar and directors like Yash Chopra were willing to risk everything for cinema. Today’s industry, heavily driven by box office metrics and media narratives, lacks that reckless devotion. Advani believes only filmmakers like Karan Johar and Aditya Chopra possess the ability to revive that fearless spirit, though even they likely miss the unfiltered madness of those earlier days.
