She was too senior to apply when it was launched ten years ago, but IBM India chairman Vanitha Narayanan has always been a fan of her company's Corporate Service Corps program, which sends star performers to work with non-profit organisations across the world.

"IBM-ers have this desire to solve the world's big problems with technology, so it fits perfectly with our culture," she says.

Next week, 13 mid-level IBM executives from the USA, Italy, Australia, Spain, Finland, Switzerland, Singapore and China will arrive in India to work pro bono with NGOs Pratham, Kaivalya Education Foundation and United Way Mumbai. Narayanan is looking forward to hosting them.

"This is one of IBM's most successful leadership development initiatives. The experience of working in a different region, with a culturally diverse team, provides the candidates with learning they can use as global leaders," she says.
