Leaving a secure job to start a business can be daunting, especially when your entire family believes in job security. Bengaluru CA Meenal Goel grew up in a family where stability meant staying with one employer for decades. Her father spent 35 years at a private company, her uncle worked for 28 years at a PSU bank and her grandfather was a government school teacher. Yet Goel chose a very different path.

‘Business was a bad word’ in her family

Meenal Goel took to social media to share how deeply her family's belief in job security shaped her thinking. For generations, stability, pension and provident fund had represented success. Her father had spent 35 years in a private limited company, while her uncle worked for 28 years in a PSU bank. Her grandfather was a government school teacher. As Goel put it, everyone in her family had essentially had “one employer” throughout their working lives.

So when she announced that she wanted to start a business, the response was understandably cautious. She recalled being told that “business is for rich people with father's money” and that she did not have the right background. Another question kept coming up: “What if you fail?”

She had Rs 12 lakh, but no safety net

Goel admitted that her family's concerns were not entirely unfounded. When she decided to take the entrepreneurial leap, she had no business background to rely on. She had zero business knowledge, no mentor and Rs 12 lakh in savings. More importantly, she had no family backup if the venture failed.

That uncertainty left her “paralysed with fear”. She worried about losing everything, embarrassing her family and even questioned whether she was smart enough to build a business. Despite those fears, she decided to take the leap.

The first few months were ‘pure hell’

The beginning was far from easy. Goel said the first few months were “pure hell”, as she made what she described as almost every possible mistake. She lost money and, along with it, some of her confidence. But instead of returning to the security she had known all her life, she continued working on the business.

Over time, she began to see a change. Her work started taking off, and her family gradually began to understand why she had chosen a path that initially seemed so risky.

Her parents were not wrong, she realised

One of the most important lessons Goel took away from the experience was that her parents' concerns came from their own life experiences. “They weren't wrong,” she explained. They were simply looking at risk through a different lens. For her family, stability represented survival. For Goel, taking calculated risks represented growth.

That difference helped her understand that choosing entrepreneurship did not necessarily mean rejecting everything her family believed in. It meant recognising that the definition of success can change from one generation to another.

‘You don't need business in your blood’

Goel's experience eventually led her to a simple message for aspiring entrepreneurs. According to her, people do not necessarily need to come from business families or have generations of entrepreneurial experience to build something of their own. “You don't need business in your blood,” she wrote. “You need fire in your belly.”

For Goel, that meant pushing through uncertainty, learning from mistakes and continuing even when the initial months brought financial losses and self-doubt.
