Dafne Keen faced this dark side of Hollywood at just 11
Speaking on the November 3 episode of Michael Rosenbaum's Inside of You podcast, the 21-year-old actress explained that she has never been drunk enough to experience a hangover. Her decision to stay away from excessive drinking, she suggested, was shaped by what she saw while growing up in the entertainment industry.
"I’m such a control freak with that because also I think as a child actor I witnessed so much of that as a child that I just had no interest," Keen said.
She then recalled the offers she received at industry gatherings. "I was getting offered coke at wrap parties. Like, tiny. Like 11, 12, 13. So I saw what that was, so I was like, 'I don’t really have any interest in that.'"
Keen added that she was fortunate enough to refuse those offers. She did not name the people who approached her or the parties where these incidents took place.
How Dafne Keen avoided peer pressure as a teenager
The actress also revealed that avoiding alcohol and drugs sometimes meant coming up with excuses to stop people from pressuring her into drinking."I did used to lie as a teenager so that I wouldn’t get peer pressured," she said.
Recalling how she would respond when someone offered her a drink, Keen said: "I’d be like, 'Nah, I’m good. I don’t wanna drink. I already took something.' Dead sober. Like, the goodest goody-two-shoes ever."
Despite staying away from alcohol and drugs, Keen said she enjoys going out and does not feel that she needs substances to have a good time.
"I don’t really need it. I’ll go out and stay out ‘til 6, but sober. Just for the vibes, just ‘cause I like music and I like dancing and I like people," she told Rosenbaum.
From Logan fame to Star Wars and Percy Jackson
Keen’s Hollywood party experiences came in the early years of a career that started when she was still a child. She first appeared in the BBC drama The Refugees, before going on to achieve international fame in the 2017 film Logan. She was 11 when she shot the movie, playing Laura, aka X-23, opposite Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. In 2024 she reprised the role in Deadpool & Wolverine.
Keen then starred as Lyra Belacqua in the HBO/BBC adaptation of His Dark Materials, appearing in all three seasons. She also joined the Star Wars universe with a role in The Acolyte.
Now, she’s going to star as Artemis in the third season of Disney+’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians.
On the podcast, Keen also discussed Jackman's behavior toward her while they were making Logan, saying he was a protective presence during her childhood experience on a major Hollywood production.
