Selena Gomez has been a vocal advocate of mental well-being. The singer-actress has never shied away from talking about her journey with bipolar disorder, its impact on her life and how she navigated through the medical condition, emerging stronger than before. For the uninitiated, the 33-year-old announced her diagnosis in 2020 during an Instagram Live video call with fellow Disney Channel standout, singer Miley Cyrus. Now, Selena has once again worn her heart on her sleeve, opening up about dealing with manic episodes post-treatment.

Selena Gomez on manic episodes

Selena Gomez recently appeared on the Friends Keep Secrets podcast, hosted by her husband, music producer Benny Blanco. During the candid conversation, Benny revealed that his wife sometimes suffers from extreme mood swings, without even realizing it, to which Selena agreed.

Benny Blanco shared that Selena Gomez sometimes does not even remember when she is having a manic episode until it has already started happening. Benny called the situation a ‘delicate thing’ because when an individual is going through the phase, the other person has to remain quiet and avoid talking about the issue.

Selena Gomez admitted that while she still has to deal with unexpected and unpredictable moments of mania, the Love You Like A Love Song singer is not ashamed to speak about it publicly. ‘I can catch them a bit quicker,’ she said, adding that she is grateful to find a partner like Benny Blanco who understands what she is going through and supports her like a rock.

Selena Gomez on bipolar disorder

Even before Selena Gomez was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, she had a feeling that there was ‘something wrong’. She went to different therapists, moving through the complicated process and undergoing treatment at 4 different rehab centres, all of which helped her to understand the ailment better.

In conclusion, Selena Gomez called out the prejudice and hypocrisy surrounding going to therapy to treat bipolar disorder. But it was through therapy that the singer got clarity about the disease, enabling her to find out why she handles things differently, wasn’t able to get over certain things quickly, acted inconsistently and on impulse, be it out of love, passion, or fear.

Selena Gomez got married to Benny Blanco last year in September. The couple hosted a private ceremony in Santa Barbara, California, which was attended by close friends and family members. She was last seen in the comedy crime-drama Only Murders in the Building.
