New York just isn’t liberal about bagels

Telling someone what to eat — or what not to eat — is simply not kosher. Democrats especially should have no truck with such dietary proscriptions at all. Adherence to this principle is presumably what drove Democratic gubernatorial nomination hopeful, actor and gay rights activist Cynthia Nixon, better known as Miranda from Sex and the City, to bravely order a raisin and cinnamon bagel filled with smoked salmon (lox to the locals), cream cheese, tomato, onion and capers at a crucial point in her campaign. This reckless outing of her preferences may have contributed to her inevitable defeat by the Democrat incumbent, New York state Governor Andrew Cuomo this week. Her breakfast choice appears to have been a worse infarction than New York City mayor Bill de Blasio eating pizza with a knife and fork, unwittingly echoing President Donald Trump’s unabashed use of cutlery for pizza and KFC.

Nixon should have been reminded that not only did Trump then lose New York to Hillary Clinton in the 2016 elections, but back in 1972, presidential candidate George McGovern also tasted defeat there after ordering milk along with a kosher hot dog. It is unfortunate that a liberal bastion like New York chooses to be so unbending when it comes to bagels, pizzas and other comestibles. Surely, there is more to a candidate than the kind of bagel he or she eats?
