Mary Ellen Eron, who has spent 45 years working in movie theatres, became the focus of an unexpected outpouring of generosity after a video showing her cleaning at an AMC theatre in Maryville, Tennessee, went viral online.
As per the New York Post, the story began when 21-year-old Brooklyn Green visited the theatre to watch a movie. As she was leaving, she noticed Eron carrying a heavy garbage bag while pushing a cleaning cart during her shift.
Moved by the sight, Green recorded a short video and shared it on social media. Alongside the clip, she wrote, "Let's secretly help retire this beautiful woman. No one deserves to work at this age."
The video quickly gained attention, eventually attracting millions of views and likes. According to reports from WATE 6 News and the New York Post, many viewers were touched by the dedication shown by Eron, who continued working despite her advanced age.
Green later explained that she had known nothing about the woman when she first saw her. "I knew nothing about her. I didn't even know her name when I went to the theater. I just decided that she was working so hard, and I aspired to be like her one day," Green told WATE 6 News.
She added, "Her physical appearance didn't look too comfortable, especially since the way she was working so hard."
Thousands Join the Effort
Wanting to help, Green launched a GoFundMe campaign with a goal of $200,000. At first, she expected only a handful of friends to contribute. Instead, support arrived from all over the country. Within roughly 48 hours, more than 7,500 people had donated. Before donations were paused at Eron's request, the fundraiser had collected $146,317.Reflecting on the response, Green said she never imagined the campaign would grow so quickly. "So I just decided, let's shoot our shot. Let's try to retire her and thought just a couple friends would donate," she said.
The fundraiser became so widely shared that Eron learned she had gone viral before Green could personally surprise her. "I said, let's surprise this beautiful woman and try to retire her. I kept it quiet, and then in the middle of the night, her neighbor knocked on her door and said, 'Hey, you're going viral.' So that's when she found out about it. She didn't have a clue how much it was, though," Green explained, as per WATE 6 News.
The Emotional Moment
A follow-up video captured the moment Green revealed the final fundraising total to Eron. When she saw the amount printed on a piece of paper, Eron's reaction was immediate. "Oh my goodness. That's a lot of money," she said.In another version of the video, she exclaimed, "Oh my goodness gracious! That's a lot of money." Green responded warmly, telling her, "That's a lot of money and you deserve every bit of it."
The emotional exchange quickly spread online, with many viewers praising both Green's initiative and the generosity of thousands of donors.
A Lifetime of Giving Back
People who know Eron say the donations could not have gone to a more deserving person.According to Green and theatre management, Eron has spent years helping others through her local church and supporting people experiencing homelessness. Green also said Eron had been assisting a mother and her children in addition to helping members of the homeless community.
Despite becoming the recipient of a major fundraising campaign, Eron remained focused on expressing gratitude. In a message addressed to donors, she said, "Thank you so very much to all the wonderful people that have donated money to the GoFundMe."
She added, "I'm overwhelmed and certainly blessed by the Lord and you wonderful people. Thank you once more." Green later recalled Eron's feelings after learning about the fundraiser, saying, "She was so thankful. She's like, 'God blessed me beyond measure.'"
Retirement Decision Remains Hers
Although the fundraising campaign was created to help Eron retire, the final decision remains entirely her own.The theatre's manager told local media that Eron loves her job and has dedicated nearly half a century to working in movie theatres. Whether she chooses to continue working or finally step away, the financial support now gives her an option she may not have had before.
For many people following the story, the fundraiser became a reminder that small acts of compassion can still bring strangers together. What began as one customer's concern for an elderly worker ended with thousands of people helping ensure that a woman who spent decades serving others can now look ahead with greater security and choice.
