The Omen 15 is the latest gaming laptop from HP. The company’s sub-brand Omen has always been about the latest hardware and hip design, be it a desktop or laptop. Omen 15 continues the tradition and also adds a few handy features. We really think it instantly catches your attention with design. The lid has a mix of brushed metal and carbon fiber, red accents and the Omen logo. On the back, it has two large heat vents on either side that prove just how much power it has under the hood. On the inside, the 15.6-inch anti-glare screen has slim bezels. The palm rest is brushed metal while the trackpad has a matte finish to compliment the overall look.

We loved the backlit keyboard with configurable backlighting (brightness + customisable colour zones). The only gripe with design is that the laptop is still a plastic body and not metal. The obvious benefit of this is that the laptop weighs just 2.25kg — not too much more than the average 15-inch laptop What deserves special mention is the display. This is one of the big advantages Omen 15 has over the competition. This laptop comes with a 144hz refresh rate display — this is typically found on expensive gaming monitors and not on laptops.

The high refresh rate gives gamers a significant advantage over other players(who will mostly be using the typical re-fresh rate of 60hz). Faster refresh rates offer you a clearer image with fast moving images, giving you split second advantages while playing.

Like most new gaming laptops, Omen 15 has the latest 8th generation Intel processors. Our review unit was powered by a Core i7 processor with 16GB RAM, Nvidia GTX 1070 GPU with Max-Q design, 128GB SSD and 1TB HDD (7,200rpm). We played FarCry 5 and Rise of the Tomb Raider on the laptop and both of them worked butter-smooth at full HD resolution with maxed out graphic settings. After about an hour and a half of gaming, the laptop becomes uncomfortably hot with temperatures reaching 82 degrees Celcius. This is not dangerously hot for a shutdown, but very noticable.

It comes with Windows 10 and while you get the usual bloatware, there is also the Omen Command Center app. Using the command center, you can see your system vitals, control keyboard lighting, enable network booster for gaming as well as switch to performance mode. Some of the other things that impressed us include the loud speaker output, dedicated microphone jack and easy access for hardware upgrades. Battery life is something we could complain about.

With gaming, we got under 3 hours of battery life which would stretch to just about 4 hours with normal use. The other thing we are not too fond of is the small size of the arrow keys on the keyboard com-pared to the rest of the keys.

For anyone looking at serious horse-power in a laptop, the Omen 15 fits the bill. There are no options in this price segment that offer these specifications currently, especially with a 144hz display. The next best alternative is the MSI 6E63 raider that offers similar specifications for Rs 1,69,990. It has a 15.6-inch panel with 120Hz refresh rate and comes with 256GB SSD + 1TB HDD.
