Little did fashion designer Sita Mikhail (38) know that a casual holiday to see the Mysore Palace (Mysuru) and the iconic Taj Mahal (Agra) would result in a path-breaking design for her debut showcase at the recently concluded Lakme Fashion Week in Mumbai.
So inspired was Bengaluru-based Mikhail by the colourful stained-glass windows at the historic monuments that she incorporated it as the embroidery story for her western women’s wear this year. Called ‘Mirror Tells A Tale’, the collection of 35 dresses made with silk donned stained glass embroidery in kaleidoscopic geometric and floral designs.
“My research shows that I am the first designer across the globe to use stained glass embroidery technique on garments. Others have used mirror or acrylic sheets,” says Mikhail, who launched the label ‘Sita Mikhail’ with her husband five years ago.

Interestingly, so novel is the craft as an embroidery technique that Mikhail could not get any karigars to execute apparel-friendly stained glass. Thus, she took the scientific task upon herself.
“I took tutorials on Youtube. It was a challenge to get the colours and the technique right. After three months of trial-and-error, I started handpainting glass for my collection at my Bengaluru studio,” says Mikhail.

She created stained-glass bootis in royal blue, pinks, dark reds, gold and pearl colours and had Bollywood actress Neha Sharma walk down as showstopper for the fashion week.
Calling this new-found embroidery a fascinating art form, Mikhail says, “It’s the way the colours illuminate when the dress twirls in the light. It creates a fascinating kaleidoscope.”
Her next plan of action is to execute stained-glass embroidery on traditional Indian wear like bridal lehengas. Besides retailing at flagship store in HSR Layout in Bengaluru, Mikhail also stocks her collection at stores in Delhi, Pune, Mumbai and Surat.
