How Roger Federer and Anna Wintour became friends

James Gandolfini chugging big margaritas, Linda Evangelista getting her French fries fix, transsexual singer Amanda Lepore taking her top off in a show of pique, Madonna arriving for dinner after an NBA game, all this and more transpired at the now shuttered New York restaurant Pastis. And this is where the intriguing power friendship between Roger Federer and editor-in-chief of Vogue, Anna Wintour was born.

With the US Open on in New York, a tennis portal ran a series of articles on the relationship between the city and Federer. Wintour contributed a piece. "I first met Roger Federer over lunch in the summer of 2005," she writes.

"He was in town to win the U.S. Open, and a mutual friend had arranged for us to meet at Pastis, knowing that I was a fan. But 'fan' is quite an understatement."

Like most tennis lovers, Wintour is transfixed by the elegance of Federer's game, nothing less, nothing more. "All I want to ever discuss with Roger is tennis: his tennis, other players, the next Slam," she writes.
