How Rashesh Shah, CEO of Edelweiss Group, became the marathon man
On the day of the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon, several corporate honchos participated in the ‘half marathon’ and the ‘dream run’, while some opted for the full marathon.

Rashesh Shah, chairman and CEO of Edelweiss Group, clocked 2:05:53 at an average speed of 10.01 kmph in the half marathon. However, what is lesser known about Shah is that he had participated in the full marathon the previous year.

On why he opted for the half marathon, Shah said it was a strategic move to conserve energy. "I’m doing a full one in April, so I didn’t want to do too many fulls close by," he told ET.

In fact, Shah plans to run the full course at the NN Rotterdam Marathon, which is slated for April 10 this year. But Shah doesn’t intend to stop there. Whereas the Mumbai Marathon is a good exercise for which most participants spend months training, for Shah, it is merely another in a series of races that takes part in every year.

"Yes, I do quite a few (races). I do at least one full and 2-3 half marathons every year. Also, I run a triathlon every year," he said. "It’s worthwhile to go abroad to do a full. So I do some half marathons in India and then go abroad. Sometimes, I would like to do a full, so that’s also fun to do."

It was Shah’s sixth Mumbai Marathon—he has done five half marathons and one full.

On Mumbai and Delhi’s half marathons, he said, "They have their own unique charm. The half is more fun than the full in Mumbai because it gets very hot at the end. The last hour-and-a-half to two hours are very tough. Even if it is winter time, it gets very gruelling," he said, adding that conditions were good this year.

On how he became a serial marathon runner, Shah said, "About six years ago, I used to play tennis and I got an elbow problem. I was looking for something (to get back to fitness). On a lark, I did the first half and I enjoyed it."

Shah said he has a group of friends with whom he participates in these marathons. "So now, it’s about the thrill of going to the races with this group of friends."
