Paul McCartney added a playful twist to Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding celebrations when he suggested that the pop superstar join him on stage to sing one of The Beatles’ most famous love songs to her husband. The legendary musician recently shared the behind-the-scenes anecdote during a television appearance, offering another glimpse into the couple’s star-studded wedding.

Paul McCartney’s playful request to Taylor Swift

During his October 2 appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, McCartney, 84, recalled performing The Beatles’ classic I Want to Hold Your Hand at Swift and Kelce’s wedding reception. According to People, Swift had personally asked the former Beatles member to perform the song. McCartney, however, had a different suggestion. “I said, you should sing along, and you should sing it to your man,” he recalled, prompting laughter from the audience. It remains unclear whether Swift joined McCartney for the performance. Nevertheless, the exchange offered a light-hearted moment from a wedding that brought together some of the biggest names in entertainment.

Why ‘I Want to Hold Your Hand’ was special

Released in 1963 in the United Kingdom and in the United States in 1964, I Want to Hold Your Hand became a defining early hit for The Beatles. The song also helped propel the British band towards mainstream success in America during the height of Beatlemania. According to The Guardian, McCartney performed the track at the couple’s reception at Madison Square Garden in New York on July 3, 2026, marking the first time in roughly six decades that he had performed it publicly as a solo artist. The choice of song was particularly fitting for a wedding, given its romantic theme. Swift, known for weaving personal experiences and relationships into her music, reportedly requested the performance herself.

Swift and Kelce exchanged vows at Madison Square Garden in a celebration attended by celebrities, musicians, athletes and close friends. Comedian Adam Sandler officiated the ceremony, while the couple’s brothers, Austin Swift and Jason Kelce, took prominent roles. McCartney was not the only music legend to perform at the event. Stevie Nicks, the Fleetwood Mac singer and a longtime musical inspiration for Swift, also entertained guests, according to People. The wedding later drew further attention when Kelce spoke about the occasion. In August, the Kansas City Chiefs tight end described it as “the best night of my life”, as reported by Variety.

A memorable musical moment

McCartney’s anecdote adds another personal detail to a wedding that combined celebrity spectacle with music chosen specifically for the couple. Whether or not Swift joined him for the Beatles classic, the moment connected one of pop music’s biggest contemporary stars with a song that helped shape modern popular music. For guests at the reception, it was a reminder that sometimes the most memorable wedding performances come with a little humour and an unexpected invitation to sing along.
