You spend nearly a third of your life in bed, but when was the last time you washed your sheets? While they may look clean, your bedding can quietly collect dead skin cells, sweat, bacteria, dust mites and even pet dander. Health experts say waiting too long between washes can create an ideal environment for microscopic organisms to thrive. If you have allergies, asthma or eczema, keeping your sheets clean becomes even more important. Here's what doctors recommend.

Why your sheets get dirty faster than you think

As reported by Cleveland Clinic, dermatologist Dr. Sean McGregor explained that the average person sheds about one and a half grams of keratinocytes every day. These skin cells, which are largely made up of the protein keratin, amount to nearly half a teaspoon daily.

Dr. McGregor explained that friction naturally removes the outer layer of skin while you sleep because your body remains in constant contact with the sheets. Those dead skin cells then become food for bacteria. He further noted that bacteria thrive on skin, adding that the human body actually contains more bacterial organisms than human cells, making skin one of their favourite places to live.

How often should you wash your bed sheets?

Medical experts recommend washing your bed sheets at least once every week. According to Cleveland Clinic, pillows and blankets do not need to be washed quite as frequently. Cleaning them every few months is generally enough to reduce germs and microscopic organisms. However, they may require more frequent washing during hot weather or if pets regularly sleep on the bed.

Why weekly washing matters

Board-certified family medicine physician Dr. Jennifer Caudle, who is also an Associate Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine, explained that even if you do not shower before bed every night, dirt and debris from your body are transferred to your bedding.

She noted that your body sheds thousands of skin cells daily. If you sleep with pets, animal dander also becomes part of what builds up in the bedding. Dr. Caudle added that this combination can create conditions that encourage bacteria, fungi and other microorganisms. Keeping sheets clean can also help people living with allergies, asthma and eczema by reducing exposure to common irritants.

She also highlighted that night sweats create additional moisture in bedding, making it an even more favourable environment for bacteria and fungi to multiply. Although some sources suggest people who frequently travel or do not sleep in their own bed every night may stretch washing to every two weeks, Dr. Caudle said once a week remains the ideal schedule.

She also recommends washing sheets in hot water with detergent to remove dirt, bacteria and allergens effectively.

Sticky, slimy or grimy texture
If your sheets no longer feel fresh and instead feel sticky or greasy, body oils and sweat have likely built up.

Visible stains
Food spills, body oils, makeup or other stains are obvious signs that your bedding needs cleaning.

Sweat marks
Yellowish patches or sweat stains suggest moisture has repeatedly soaked into the fabric, creating conditions where bacteria can thrive.

Unpleasant odours
If your sheets no longer smell fresh even after airing them out, accumulated sweat, bacteria and body oils are probably responsible.

Crumbs, dirt, or debris
The presence of crumbs, dust, dirt, insects or other foreign particles that irritate your skin is another clear sign it is time to wash your bedding.
