How Kannada actress Ranya Rao allegedly smuggled 14 kg of gold in biggest ever seizure at Bengaluru airport

Kannada actress Ranya Rao, once a rising star of the silver screen, is now at the center of one of the biggest gold smuggling scandals in Bengaluru. The actress, known for her roles in films like Pataki and Maanikya, was arrested by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on March 3 at Bengaluru International Airport after allegedly attempting to smuggle 14.2 kg of gold worth ₹12.86 crore from Dubai.

Ranya's frequent trips to Dubai had raised suspicions, prompting officials to keep a close eye on her movements. When she arrived on an Emirates flight, officers were waiting. During a search, they reportedly discovered 14 gold bars strapped to her thighs with tape and crepe bandages — a trick straight out of a crime thriller.

The Glittering Stash

Further raids at Ranya's luxurious Lavelle Road apartment unearthed ₹2.67 crore in cash and gold jewellery worth ₹2.06 crore — pushing the total haul to ₹17.29 crore. The discovery has sent shockwaves through the film industry and left many questioning whether the actress was merely a pawn in a larger smuggling syndicate.


The scandal has also cast a shadow over her stepfather, senior IPS officer Ramachandra Rao. While the officer has publicly distanced himself from Ranya, stating they had been estranged since her marriage, the incident has reignited interest in past controversies surrounding the family.

"Shocked and Devastated"

Reacting to the arrest, Ramachandra Rao expressed his disbelief, insisting he had no prior knowledge of his stepdaughter's alleged activities. "The law will take its course," he told ANI, adding, "There is no black mark on my career."

Currently in judicial custody until March 18, Ranya's legal team is preparing to file for bail. Meanwhile, the DRI is digging deeper into her frequent overseas trips and potential links to a wider smuggling network.

As the investigation unfolds, the case has exposed the murky intersection between glamour, privilege, and crime — proving that all that glitters is not always gold.
