How India will get medals in Olympics, asks athlete after sharing Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium’s condition post Diljit Dosanjh concert

The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, one of India’s premier sports venues, recently became the subject of controversy following the two-day ‘Dil-luminati’ concert by Punjabi singer Diljit Dosanjh. The event, held on October 26 and 27, attracted close to 35,000 fans each night, leaving the stadium littered with waste and damaged equipment, drawing criticism from athletes and netizens alike.

Beant Singh, a middle-distance runner, took to social media to express his frustration. Posting videos of the stadium in disarray, he highlighted the aftermath of the event, which included garbage, alcohol containers, and broken sports equipment scattered across the track and field area. Singh lamented that the stadium, which athletes rely on for practice, would now be closed for cleaning, depriving them of crucial training time. He estimated that the venue might remain unavailable for as long as ten days, further disrupting the routines of young athletes.

The athlete criticized the authorities for prioritizing entertainment over sports, lamenting the damage to equipment used by budding athletes. Singh’s post also voiced broader frustrations about the neglect of sports infrastructure in India, emphasizing how the lack of respect and support for athletes contributes to the country’s underwhelming Olympic performance.


"This is the situation of sport, sportspersons and stadiums in India. Many will point out once in four years that medals do not come in the Olympics. This is because there is no respect and support for sportspersons in this country," he said.


While the concert was celebrated for its high-energy performances and Diljit Dosanjh’s popular tracks, not all attendees left satisfied. Some fans complained about poor event management, citing chaotic entry and exit processes.

Many users echoed Singh’s sentiments, expressing disapproval of the stadium being used for non-sporting activities. Comments flooded social media platforms, criticizing the misuse of the space and questioning why such events were allowed in the first place. Some users remarked that stadiums should remain dedicated to sports and training, while others expressed disappointment that the enthusiasm seen at concerts isn’t matched when it comes to supporting athletes during competitions.

Sports Authority of India (SAI) Responds

In response to the backlash, the Sports Authority of India (SAI) issued a statement addressing the concerns. They clarified that the event organizers had rented the stadium until October 28 to complete the cleaning process and were required to restore the venue to its original condition. According to SAI, the organizers paid full rental fees, and the terms of the contract specified that the stadium would be returned in the same state it was handed over.

SAI also pointed out that the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium currently does not host elite athletes, with only beginners participating under the ‘Come and Play’ program. Additionally, SAI stated that the stadium is in its off-season, meaning no professional camps or competitions were disrupted by the event. The authority confirmed that the cleanup was already complete following the concert and assured that the venue is ready for future use.
