Since the beginning, mental health has been an important part of Ted Lasso. Jason Sudeikis, who co-created the show, previously said the heavier storylines were not suddenly added in Season 2. He told Us Weekly that the mental health themes “were just there” and had been part of the show from the start.
Sudeikis said the writers wanted to explore those issues while still keeping the show’s lighter tone. He described the approach as a way to “trojan horse” bigger issues into what appeared to be a fun comedy series.
The storyline also had an impact beyond the show. In a 2023 interview with the Kansas City Star, Sudeikis said cast members had been approached by viewers who told them the show had saved their lives. “And I’ve said, ‘Me, too,’” Sudeikis said. “And they usually laugh. And yet I’m not joking.”
He also spoke specifically about the show's suicide storyline. Sudeikis said some viewers told him the story made them rethink decisions they were considering, including because of their children and the people they would leave behind.
