BENGALURU: The new economy of Bengaluru is screaming loud in the form of high-octane social life, food and wine culture, experiential travel to simply owning a beautiful home. This rapid urbanisation has birthed a breed of brand new professionals — home stylists. It is cool now for well-heeled Bengalureans to rope a home stylist to give their abode or just a room an instant makeover from time to time.
Like fashion stylists, home stylists have a creative bent that helps them apply a sense of aesthetic to décor after all the civil work. Take the case of homemaker Ramitha Shetty. While building her fourstoried 8,000-sqft home in Sanjay Nagar, she chose to work with fashion designer and home stylist Tina Sareen for soft designing. The home stylist picked the furniture, upholstery, wallpaper, rugs and even the artworks.
“Since a home stylist comes from a different professional sphere, he or she brings a unique sensibility and ideas that are not cut-and-paste. Moreover, my house now looks different from that of my peers,” says Shetty.
She observes that once the home is built, architects and interior designers don’t look back. However, a home stylist can be called often for a décor perk-up and at an affordable cost. For example, Sareen was called to give Shetty’s living room and dining-table a quick accessory change and floral-themed look for her Diwali party a year ago.
“Bengalureans call me for home styling when there is a big change in the family. Like a big rise in income, a new home, a new phase in life like having a baby or the owner’s retirement,” notes Sareen, who has earned a quick buck by styling eight homes till now.

Fashion stylist Anu Jha recently added home styling to her repertoire of work. She charges Rs 50,000 a day upwards depending on the size of the project.
“People are more open to having stylists design their homes now unlike ten years ago. Many rope us in because they don’t have the time to design it themselves,” says Jha, adding, “Boredom gets people to reinvent their living space. Sometimes, when there is a change of relationship status, kids or marriage, they seek a quick transformation of their living space.”
Udita R Tayal, proprietor of interior firm Unique Design Ideas, has added a home styling vertical recently. “Living rooms, bedrooms and bathrooms undergo frequent makeovers with offbeat accessories. Young couples are primary takers. Those over the age of 50 years looking to reinvent spaces call me for a quick style update.”
According to Anshul Chodha, principal architect at Sanctuary Architects and Designers, peer pressure and online marketplaces have fuelled this culture. “Social Bengalurean does not want his house to look outdated. Now, there is easy access to home décor, furniture and upholstery online. With a home stylist, they can thus give their home a swift makeover at an economical budget,” he says.

Predicting a bright future for this profession, Chodha notes that it will give more luxury and design accessibility to the masses while giving a new platform to creative millennials of the city.
