Vikas Krishan's father helps him with training by holding the punching bag.
The mirror shows the boxer his cuts and bruises. But it is also a fighter’s friend during shadow boxing and workouts. What better way to check the body positioning or the throw of the uppercut than in front of an object that never lies?
Indian lightweight boxer Vikas Krishan, who qualified for his third Olympics last month, is using the mirror, among other things, to stay in shape. And his father and son help him during the workouts, which are at his home in Bhivani, Haryana, the cradle of Indian boxing.
“Though my father doesn’t know much about boxing, he helps me by holding the punching bag while I’m practising,” 28-year-old Krishan tells ETPanache. “My son helps while I’m working on my footwork. Getting your family to help you work out is encouraging and something everyone must try.”
The Haryana Police DSP is keen to iron out weaknesses before the Olympics come around next year. Training in front of the mirror revealed to Krishan a flaw that had crept in. “It helped me understand that my body moves up while punching, which gives my opponents an opportunity to counter attack. I am working on my reflexes and making sure my body stays low while I punch,” he says.
Krishan participated without success in the 2012 and 2016 Olympics. He hopes to be third time lucky in Tokyo, even though the postponement of the Games disturbed his momentum.
“The bright side is that it gives me one more year to prepare. I can make myself stronger and thus harder to beat,” he says.
