Houseparty plans a 3-day online fest, featuring Katy Perry, John Legend & Snoop Dogg

The videos will include celebrities engaging in like cooking, singing, dancing and exercising.

Houseparty to foray into live-video broadcasts, à la Instagram Live.
Video-calling app Houseparty has seen its popularity surge vis a vis established rivals like Skype over the past few months, but makers of the apps now extend its functionality to take on apps like Instagram and YouTube which allow live-video broadcasts.

Houseparty is looking to expand its ambit by hosting a three-day online festival featuring musicians, actors and a range of celebrities drawn from different fields. These live video interactions will be streamed live on the app, and can be co-watched by multiple people. The event will run from May 15 to May 17, and is the first in a series of events called “In the House.”

The videos will include celebrities engaging in fun activities like cooking, singing, dancing, and exercising. The first “In the House” weekender has a lineup featuring Katy Perry, John Legend, Alicia Keys, Snoop Dogg, Zooey Deschanel, Dua Lipa, Neil Patrick Harris, and Terry Crews.


Houseparty has tweaked its video player to make it possible to co-watch a live event with friends, a departure from its earlier format which played videos on the screen whilst covering people’s faces. In effect, people will be able to watch videos with their friends, rather than watching in a group text chat.

“Now that we have this live player it allows us to create more interactive experiences for our users to enjoy together in the future. This content will be additive to the Houseparty video chat experience for our users,” Houseparty spokesperson Kimberly Baumgarten told the news website TechCrunch.

Users of the app will be alerted about new shows and live videos half an hour before the broadcast by a mobile notification that has a TV icon and a virtual billboard. Users who missed the initial broadcast can tune in to a rerun, 12 hours after the show initially debuted on the app. House shows will re-air only once, after which they disappear from the platform.
