House of the Dragon Season 3 final episode

The Targaryen civil war is heading into another major clash as House of the Dragon Season 3 reaches its eighth and final episode. After a season filled with betrayals, shifting alliances, dragons and growing tensions between Rhaenyra Targaryen and the Greens, the finale is now set to bring the latest chapter of the Dance of the Dragons to a close.

The penultimate episode left several characters in uncertain positions, while the return of Aegon II with his dragon Sunfyre has changed the situation once again. The Battle of Tumbleton is also expected to be a major part of the finale.

House of the Dragon Season 3 finale release date and time

The Season 3 finale will premiere in the US on Sunday, August 9, at 9 pm ET on HBO and Max. The episode will also be available to viewers in India on JioHotstar from 6:30 am IST on Monday, August 10.

Season 3 has eight episodes in total, following the same eight-episode format used for Season 2. Episode 8 is therefore the official season finale.

For Indian viewers, the early morning release means the finale will be available on JioHotstar from 6:30 am on Monday.

The Battle of Tumbleton is likely to be at the centre of the final episode. Forces from both sides are moving closer to the conflict, with the Rivermen and Winter Wolves also expected to play a role in what could become one of the season's biggest battles.

The Greens have gained an important advantage after Ulf the White switched sides. His decision has created another problem for Rhaenyra, while Ormund Hightower continues to gather strength.

Aegon II is also no longer simply trying to escape. After being rescued by Sunfyre, he has a dragon beside him again, potentially giving the Green faction a much-needed boost.

Rhaenyra, meanwhile, is facing pressure from several directions. Her doubts, grief and growing concerns about the people around her could affect the choices she makes as the war becomes more violent.

Finale trailer hints at a darker Rhaenyra

The preview for the finale suggests that Rhaenyra could be pushed into taking a much harsher approach to the war. Daemon's voice can be heard encouraging her to fully embrace her power, while the trailer hints at decisions that could have serious consequences for both her enemies and ordinary people caught in the conflict.

There are also signs of more betrayals and uncertainty among the different factions. Dragons are preparing for battle and armies are moving, setting up what could be a major confrontation.

Director Nina Lopez-Corrado had already teased the coming storyline after Episode 7. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, she said, “I do think you should start refreshing your memories for the Battle of Tumbleton.”

She also discussed changes made from George R.R. Martin's source material, saying, “We do deviate just a little bit in episode seven from what’s originally in the books and, personally, from a character standpoint, what Ryan [Condal, showrunner] and the writers did in terms of that really helped evolve the character storylines from what were in the books.”

She added, “I know that’s a very controversial thing to say for diehards, but I think some of the storylines that you’re gonna see in seven that’ll carry on into eight were really executed strongly by the writers and also by the actors.”

What is House of the Dragon about?

Based on George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood, House of the Dragon is set around 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones. The HBO series follows House Targaryen and the civil war that breaks out over the succession to the Iron Throne.

Season 3 has focused on the increasingly bitter fight between Rhaenyra's supporters and those backing Aegon II. Now, with Tumbleton approaching and both sides preparing for another round of bloodshed, the Season 3 finale is set to leave the story in a very different place before the next chapter.
