Hot-desking negatively impacts introvert's performance
We all like to work in organisations that have an open-door policy, so that everyone sits on the same level to facilitate interaction and transparency across hierarchies. Hot-desking being one of the most common workspace models these days, not many people like the idea. Especially for introverts who make a conscious effort to avoid interaction, this model is something that constantly hampers their performance and negatively affects their productivity. Here's why.

What is hot-desking?

A new trend of workspace sharing, where people of various levels sit close to each other and share a single a desk. A model where the number of employees outnumber the desks (an extremely cramped workspace sans cubicles).A set-up where two or three people share the same workstation at different times of the day.

Fear of interacting

One of the biggest fears that introverts face is that of communicating with people. However,

In spite of being unable to put forth their ideas more often, introverts have extremely innovative thought processes. However, they feel a constant threat of non-acceptance while working in a cluttered space with people butting in from time to time. With so many people trying to outperform each other, they suffer a lack of like-minded people who would support their ideas.

Fear of being misunderstood

In a hot-desking model, since people sit close to each other, excessive talking is inevitable. As they are slightly reclusive in nature it is very easy for others to misunderstand them to be snooty. This, in turn, hampers their productivity, since they are less proactive than others, especially when there are a lot of contenders for the same role.

Too much attention

They are not the ones who enjoy too much attention, in fact it makes them nervous. This model inadvertently gives much access to information about each other, which makes them uncomfortable. In order to avoid being in the spotlight, they do not bring their thoughts to the table.

Insecurity

Introverts also experience a feeling of insecurity, when too many people flutter around them. The fact that others are comparatively more vocal than them makes them feel insecure about their capabilities, which also makes their supervisors look down upon such a person. There are several times when their performance is ignored, since it gets sidelined due to the acute insecurity they face as a part of working in such an environment.
