Honda Activa in the fast lane, overtakes Hero Splendor to become India's largest selling two-wheeler

NEW DELHI: Honda Activa overtook Hero Splendor to become the country’s largest selling two-wheeler in the first half of the current calendar year.

This is the first time in 17 years that a scooter has gained the top slot in terms of volume sales in the domestic two-wheeler market.

With sales of 1,338,015 units, Honda Activa volumes grew by over eight per cent between January and June this year over1,233,725 units sold in the year-ago period. It has now gained a lead of 104290 units over the nearest competitor, Hero’s 100 CC motorcycle Splendor.

Sales of Activa have increased from 55,000 units in its debut year (FY02) to over 2.46 million units in FY16.

According to Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI), every second automatic scooter purchased in India today is a Honda Activa and its sales alone contribute 15 per cent to the domestic two-wheeler industry.
