Choosing something to watch this week could be harder than expected. From superheroes investigating a dark mystery on Earth and beloved animated toys confronting the digital age to an unsettling Boeing documentary and a drama inspired by the life of a Scottish campaigner, the latest Hollywood streaming slate covers almost every mood. Among the biggest attractions is DC Studios’ Lanterns, while Toy Story 5 begins its digital rollout. Netflix, Prime Video and Apple TV also have new titles arriving between August 17 and 22. Here are some releases worth having on your radar.

Lanterns- JioHotstar

Release date: August 17

DC's Green Lantern mythology gets a detective-story treatment in Lanterns. Aaron Pierre plays new recruit John Stewart alongside Kyle Chandler as veteran Lantern Hal Jordan. Instead of relying entirely on intergalactic spectacle, the series brings its two cosmic law-enforcement officers into an Earth-based investigation. The central mystery begins with a disturbing case in Nebraska and sends the unlikely partners searching for answers. The series is streaming on JioHotstar in India.

Toy Story 5- Prime Video, Rent or Buy

Digital release: August 17 in supported markets

Woody, Buzz Lightyear and Jessie have survived plenty of threats, but Toy Story 5 introduces an enemy particularly suited to 2026: technology. The Pixar sequel puts traditional toys up against Lilypad, a tablet that begins transforming Bonnie's relationship with play. Tom Hanks and Tim Allen return as Woody and Buzz, while Andrew Stanton directs. Prime Video lists the film for digital purchase in supported territories, although availability varies by country.

Stolen Girl- August 18

Kate Beckinsale leads Stolen Girl, a thriller about a mother desperately searching for her daughter after the child is taken abroad by her former husband. The story follows Maureen, whose six-year-old daughter Amina disappears in 1993. After years without success, she encounters a professional specialising in recovering internationally abducted children, setting up a dangerous search. Freefall: A Reckoning for Boeing- Netflix

Release date: August 19

For viewers interested in investigative documentaries, Freefall: A Reckoning for Boeing revisits one of the most scrutinised companies in modern aviation. Directed by Rory Kennedy, the documentary follows her 2022 film Downfall: The Case Against Boeing. The film features whistleblower testimony while examining allegations surrounding Boeing's corporate culture and safety practices. I Swear- Netflix

Release date: August 22

Robert Aramayo stars in I Swear, based on the life of Scottish campaigner John Davidson, who developed severe Tourette syndrome as a teenager. Something for almost every viewer

This week's releases are unusually varied. Lanterns offers a superhero story wrapped around a crime mystery, while Toy Story 5 asks what happens to childhood play when screens begin replacing physical toys. Stolen Girl and Is God Is bring darker human stories, while Freefall turns towards real-world corporate accountability. Whether viewers are looking for animation, superheroes, action, drama or documentary filmmaking, the August 17–22 slate provides plenty of reasons to refresh the watchlist.
