A proper haircare regime will be enough to ensure your hair remains protected from damage.
Highlights
Powdered colours can be really damaging to your hair.
Gulaal contains harmful substances like copper sulphate.
Don't step outside without tying your hair up.
Oiled tresses are easier to clean, as colour doesn't penetrate them easily.
Nothing like chasing each other with handfuls of gulaal or threatening your friends with a pichkari (water gun) on Holi. However, all that revelry can wreak havoc on your hair, especially if it has been dyed or highlighted.
Gulaal May Be Bad News For Your Tresses, Here’s Why No matter how organic the gulaal brand claims to be, these powdered colours can cause immense damage to your hair as they consist of chemicals like lead oxide, mercury sulphite, copper sulphate, etc. Moreover, additives like glass particles and mica dust are added to the colours to make them appear shiny. Prolonged exposure to these colours can not only do a number on your hair, but it can also cause health complications such as asthma, temporary blindness, skin rashes, etc.
However, this does not mean you have to keep away from the Holi fun! A proper haircare regime will be enough to ensure your hair remains protected from damage.
Pre-Holi Hair Care Tips:
Don’t leave your hair open. Gulaal can penetrate your roots more easily if it hangs loose. Braid it, or tie it up in a bun or ponytail before stepping out of the house.
Apply some coconut oil to your tresses before going out to party. Colours will not stick to oiled hair and can be washed off easily.
You can cover your hair with a scarf or shower cap.
Post-Holi Hair Care Regimen:
Once you return home, rinse out the excess colours from your hair with the help of a herbal shampoo. Apply a generous coating of oil on your hair before going to bed. Rinse off with some shampoo the next day. Repeat until your hair is gulaal-free.
You can also apply DIY (do it yourself) hair masks like curd and lemon juice to your hair. This will help smoothen your hair cuticles and also prevent your hair from getting gnarled. You can keep it overnight and wash it off with a mild shampoo the next day.
