Jaskaran Singh Aujla, popularly known as Karan Aujla, has emerged as one of the most recognised names in Punjabi music. The singer, rapper, and songwriter, who featured in Vicky Kaushal’s Tauba Tauba, has built a massive fan base with songs that have performed strongly on global music platforms. However, his journey to success was far from easy. From losing both parents as a child to moving abroad and starting from scratch, Aujla’s rise has been shaped by years of struggle.
Losing his parents
In an interview with Curly Tales, Aujla opened up about losing his father in an accident when he was just nine years old. He recalled that it was the first death in his family, and everything changed after that. The house that was once filled with people became empty, and he found himself eating meals alone. He shared that his sisters tried to manage the family after his father’s death, while his mother wanted them to move to Canada for better opportunities. Eventually, his sisters settled abroad, leaving Aujla with his mother. Years later, tragedy struck again when his mother was diagnosed with cancer and passed away in 2011.
From pain to music
Aujla said the pain pushed him towards writing. In another interview with Q’s Tom Power, he revealed that his first song came from a very dark emotional place. He wrote about feeling like he had no reason to live, but slowly realised that his words had rhythm and meaning. Writing became a way to express himself and eventually turned into a career. While in Canada, Aujla had to work hard to support himself. After moving to Vancouver in 2014, he worked part-time as a longshoreman in Surrey while continuing to chase his dream of making music. His early career was built through songwriting. He wrote for several Punjabi artists, including Jassi Gill, Deep Jandu, Elly Mangat, Jazzy B, Bohemia, and Sukh-E. His first major recognition came when Jassi Gill sang his lyrics for the song Range, which gained popularity locally.
His debut
His debut track Cell Phone with Mac Benipal did not perform well, but Aujla continued working behind the scenes. Later, he began releasing his own music, with songs like Property of Punjab, Alcohol 2, Yaarian Ch Fikk, Shit Talk, Up & Down, and Lafaafe helping him gain recognition. The turning point came in 2018 with Don’t Worry. Aujla recalled that the song was receiving millions of views daily, which made him decide to focus on independent music and create his own path. Over time, tracks like Jhanjar, Red Eyes, Kya Baat Aa, and So Far became major hits. His debut album Bacthafucup also performed strongly, earning international attention. As per reports, the singer's networth is Rs 108 crore.
