Himachali woman’s stone mehndi is a love letter to her roots. Check viral video

A woman from Himachal Pradesh showed mehndi (henna) is traditionally made using a stone. This reminded many social media users of old memories and taught others about a custom they hadn’t seen before. A video that was recently posted on Instagram has gained widespread attention due to its unique portrayal of a pahadi (hilly) custom. The woman begins the video by asking viewers if they have ever applied mehndi made from stone. Interesting, right? So far, the clip has garnered over 8 million views, and it was shared on May 6.

The woman then reminisces about her early years, when she would prepare mehndi with her sisters. “Do you know what is there on this stone? It is pahadi mehndi," she says, holding out a stone used in the process.

The woman explains that this type of mehndi naturally grows on stones in certain regions and was commonly used in her youth. In the video, she shows how to collect it by scraping it off the stone, grinding it into a paste, and applying it to her hand using a small stick.

As the video gathered popularity, it struck a chord with other users who knew the custom.

A user said, “We used to use this a lot in our childhood days." Another added, “Yes, we have also applied this." Many others learnt about the practice for the first time. “Never heard of this," one of the users on Instagram said.

Another user commented, “I have seen such a thing for the first time." “It’s new information for me, for us," a surprised individual wrote.

There were many who termed this whole process ‘stunning’ and ‘amazing’. The video demonstrates how regional customs are kept alive through human experiences and how they can feel both familiar and completely new depending on who is viewing.
