Hilarious earthquake memes trend on Twitter after strong tremors jolt North India

Afghanistan became the epicentre of a massive earthquake (6.6 magnitudes) on March 21. India, too, felt the aftershocks of the earthquake. Many residents of the Delhi-NCR region complained of tremors and were forced to come out of their homes for a while. Many people took to social media to share video clips of household items shaking. Others sought refuge in humour to cope with the grievous situation.

The hashtag #earthquake started trending on the popular microblogging platform Twitter on Tuesday (March 21) night. About 10K tweets were generated under this hashtag.

While India seems to have escaped unscathed by the earthquake, Afghanistan was not so fortunate. According to a report by the Afghanistan health ministry, four people were killed and around fifty were injured in the earthquake. Countries surrounding or in close proximity to Afghanistan, such as Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, etc., were also directly impacted.

Over 285 million people from these countries felt the tremor, according to a report by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The authorities at the USGS also revealed that the epicentre of the earthquake was found in the town of Jurm, located in the southeast corner of Afghanistan, close to the borders of Pakistan and Tajikistan.

The depth of the earthquake was nearly 156 km, according to National Center for Seismology. "Earthquake of Magnitude: 6.6, Occurred on 21-03-2023, 22:17:27 IST, Lat: 36.09 and Long: 71.35, Depth: 156 Km, Location: 133km SSE of Fayzabad, Afghanistan," the National Center for Seismology revealed in a tweet.

In India, the tremors were mainly felt by those living in North India. In cities like Delhi, Noida, and Ghaziabad, and some regions of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, people were seen rushing out of their homes, children in tow. Metro facilities in the major cities were halted for a while for safety reasons.
