'The shorts' shot to fame after Stan won the tennis championship wearing those and jokingly attributed his win to the plaid garment. The Swiss player, who had earlier promised to "swim, play tennis and then sleep" in 'the shorts', cheerfully displayed it at the press meet following the finals at Roland Garros.
Aware of the jokes surrounding the red, white and gray garment, he said, "I quite like them. Apparently , I'm the only one. They will be in the museum of Roland Garros. You will see my shorts every day if you want!"
Although it has been compared to a dishcloth, oven glove, jammies and boxers, such has been the appeal of 'the shorts' that two Twitter handles have since emerged on it.
Even Salman Rushdie mentioned the 'waw' shorts on his microblogging page, as he posted,
A grand French salute to Stan Wawrinka's magic shorts. (And to him, of course.) https://t.co/lOecpVQl5c

If Stan wins the French Open today, everyone will remember what he wore. Seriously hot pants :-) @rolandgarros
