The current heat wave may make you think India is the hottest place in the world, but here's the list of places that make the Thar desert seem like Switzerland.

1. Dasht-E Lut, Iran

Also known as the Lut Desert, it recorded a surface temperature of 71°C in 2005. Even bacteria doesn't survive in the heat & scientists found that milk does not spoil when left uncovered.

2. Queensland, Australia

A Nasa satellite recorded a surface temperature of 69.3°C in 2003. Lack of rain due to cold water currents from the Antarctic are to blame for the weather.

3. Turpan, China

The Turpan Basin in Xinjiang province held the record in 2008 when temperatures reached 66.8°C. It is the third-lowest exposed spot on the earth's surface and is covered by dark red sandstone that heats up to extreme temperatures in the afternoon sun.

4. El Azizia, Libya

The small town in the Sahara desert recorded a high of 57.78°C in 1922, and was considered the hottest spot on earth. However, the record is under dispute due to a possible thermometer malfunction.Average temperature here still above 47°C.

5. Death Valley, US

California's Death Valley recorded a searing 57°C way back in 1913. It is the lowest place in North America & the weight of the air prevents the hot air from rising.

High pressure also means the hot air keeps circulating.
