Madhavan's dream to join Indian Army
Few know that Madhavan once aimed for a very different uniform. As a young cadet, he was deeply involved with the National Cadet Corps. His commitment and performance earned him the title of Maharashtra’s Best NCC Cadet, a rare honour. That achievement opened doors to an extraordinary opportunity. Madhavan was among just eight NCC cadets selected to travel to England for advanced training with the British Army, Royal Navy, and Royal Air Force.For a teenager from India, this exposure was life-changing. The experience brought him closer to his lifelong dream of joining the Indian Army. But when he returned home and applied, he found out he was six months over the maximum age limit. Despite his credentials and international training, there were no exceptions.
With the Army dream closed, he turned to academics and completed a Bachelor of Science degree in electronics. Around the same time, he discovered a talent for communication. He began conducting personality development sessions and worked as a public speaking trainer, long before acting entered the picture.
R Madhavan's acting career
Madhavan’s entry into entertainment happened almost by accident. He was noticed by a television executive in Mumbai and soon began appearing in Hindi TV shows like Banegi Apni Baat, Saaya, and Sea Hawks. His early film appearances were brief, including a small role in Is Raat Ki Subah Nahin. A missed opportunity with Mani Ratnam’s Iruvar followed, but persistence paid off when Ratnam cast him in Alai Payuthey, which became his breakthrough. Minnale and its Hindi remake Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein later turned him into a household name, with the film achieving cult status over time. He has further starred in movies like Rang De Basanti, Guru, Halla Bol, 3 Idiots, Tanu Weds Manu, Tanu Weds Manu: Returns, Vikram Vedha, Rocketry: The Nambi Effect, Shaitaan and his recent one being De De Pyaar De 2, Kesari Chapter 2, and Dhurandhar.What does Madhavan do for fun?
