‘He was exceptional.’ Anil Kapoor-Madhuri Dixit bid goodbye to ‘Parinda’ writer Shiv Subramaniam; Arjun Kapoor says he will miss his '2 States' co-star

It has been a sad day for Bollywood as it lost veteran character actor and award-winning screenwriter Shiv Kumar Subramaniam on Sunday night. Subramaniam began his career as a writer for Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s ‘Parinda’ starring Anil Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit and Nana Pathekar. On hearing the tragic news of the actor’s demise, Anil Kapoor took to his Twitter to pay tribute to Subramaniam. The ‘Ladla’ star called him an exceptional actor, and said that from ‘Parinda’ to ‘24’ the experience of working with him was ‘exceptional’.

Kapoor shared a photo of Subramaniam and wrote, “I had the opportunity to work with Shiv first in 'Parinda' and then in '24' and both the times he was exceptional. An excellent actor who will be truly missed…my heartfelt condolences to the family.”



Actress Madhuri Dixit too shared a photo of the actor and wrote, ‘RIP’. Kapoor’s nephew, Arjun, who had worked with Subramaniam in ‘2 States’ and had several scenes with the senior actor, also paid a homage to him. In ‘2 States’ Subramaniam was the stern dad of Alia Bhatt’s character, Ananya. The young actor shared a photo of Subramaniam and wrote that he would be missed, calling him 'Shiv sir'.

In his long career, spanning over 30 years, Subramaniam has been a part of several memorable films. He began his Bollywood journey in 1989, as a writer, with the gritty and beautiful film, ‘Parinda’ and also dabbled in acting from then on.

Subramaniam mostly played supporting roles in all his films. However, irrespective of how long or short his screen time was, the actor left a lasting impression in the hearts of the audience with his performance — be it as the math teacher in ‘Stanley Ka Dabba’ or as the school principal in Rani Mukherji’s ‘Hichki’. The actor also played the lead in Colors TV's serial ‘Mukti Bandhan’ and his last work was as Sanya Malhotra’s character Meenakshi’s father in Netflix’s ‘Meenakshi Sundareshwar’.

However, it is his writing that made people sit up and take notice of his work. Apart from penning down the original story and screenplay for ‘Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi’ which won him Filmfare award, Subramaniam has also written the screenplay for films like ‘1942: A Love Story’, ‘Is Raat Ki Subah Nahi’, ‘Arjun Pandit’ and ‘Chameli’.

Mourning his death, actress Ayesha Raza Mishra wrote on social media, “Rest in peace Shiv. Aur kya kahen. Be free of the pain and rest my friend.” The actress along with film-maker Hansal Mehta shared a note on the actor’s demise.

The note reads as follows,"With profound and heartfelt grief, we wish to inform you of the passing of one of the most dignified and noble souls to inhabit human form - our dearest Shiv Subrahmanyam. Incredibly talented, he was much loved and revered personally as well as professionally."

Apart from this, journalist Beena Sarwar also said a heartfelt goodbye to the actor on her social media, and revealed that the actor had lost his 16-year-old son, Jahaan, to brain tumour just a couple of months prior to his death.
