In general, candidates arriving late to the interview is considered a faux pas and is thought to ruin their chances of landing the job, as lack of punctuality is seen as unprofessional. However, one candidate got hired on spot, despite being half-an-hour late. Taking to X, career coach Simon Ingari shared an anecdote of a candidate who was supposed to reach the venue at 10:00 am but got there at 10:30 am. The boss was reluctant to consider him as lateness is a red flag in doctors because patients often depend on prompt medical attention. However, the HR manager instead of ignoring him asked him one question, and his answer made all the difference.

"HR asked one question: "Why did you arrive 30 minutes late?" wrote Ingari.

Instead of offering excuses, the candidate calmly addressed the assumption that his lateness reflected disrespect for the interview panel's schedule.


The employer explained that timely attendance was a critical expectation because even brief delays in healthcare could have life-or-death consequences. The candidate then revealed the heartbreaking reason behind his late arrival. Earlier that morning, an eight-year-old girl living in his neighborhood had suffered a cardiac emergency. He immediately stepped in to help and spent approximately 30 minutes performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation in an attempt to save her life.

Despite his determined efforts, the child could not be revived. Before the tragic outcome became clear, her father had asked him to tell her how deeply she was loved. The candidate explained that he chose to remain with the family during those critical moments instead of abandoning the emergency to attend the interview on time. He then asked whether placing a child's life above his own appointment truly made him unprofessional.

"Her dad asked me to tell her he loved her, but she was already gone. I was late for the interview because I was right on time for her.." he said.

The explanation transformed the atmosphere in the room. The employer's frustration quickly disappeared, replaced by admiration for the candidate's compassion, integrity, and commitment to his medical responsibilities. After reviewing his outstanding résumé and recognizing the values reflected in his actions, the hiring manager instructed the HR team to offer him the position immediately, convinced that his character made him an ideal fit for the role.
