An education loan, especially to study in a foreign university, is hefty and many students struggle to pay it off for a very long time. But, an Indian techie took a Rs 40 lakh education loan to puruse MS degree in the US, in one of the top 10 Ivy leagues. And that's not all. He claims to have managed to clear the entire debt in 10 months after starting work. Sharing this milestone achievement on Reddit, the techie shared that he started off from a tier-less university in India and claims to be working in US State Government department. His story quickly gained applaud online, while some also joked about the loan payment, comparing it with paying off their own Netflix subscription.

From a “tierless” university to a top US university

The Indian youth shared his achievement on Reddit, and shared that he has cleared his "Rs 40L education loan in 10 months.” He explained that he had taken a Rs 40 lakh education loan and had “paid last 4lac today.” His academic journey, he revealed, began with a BTech from what he described as a “tierless university” in India. He later secured admission to a “T10 public ivy” in the US, where he pursued an MS in Computer Science.

The techie also credited hard work for helping him make the transition. Responding to a user, he said, “Keep working,” adding that he had worked tireless for this.


How he got to the US

When another Reddit user asked about the process, the techie explained that he took the GRE and IELTS for his US applications. He said he received some help with his applications from “people I know and seniors.” After completing his MS, he started working in the US State Government. When asked what his current role was, he replied, “Data and ML engg.” He said he had started the job 10 months earlier, around the same period in which he managed to repay his entire education loan.

Reddit reacts to his 10-month loan payoff

The repayment milestone quickly became a talking point in the Reddit thread. One user jokingly personified the education loan, writing, “Education loan: ‘I’ll be with you for 15 years.’ OP: ‘Bet.’” Another user compared the speed of his repayment to a familiar monthly expense, saying, “OP paid off the loan faster than I pay off my Netflix subscription.”

The post also prompted questions about what he had studied to take on a Rs 40 lakh loan. The youth clarified that he had pursued an “MS CS in USA.” Others used his story to share their own experiences with education debt. One user said they had taken a Rs 4 lakh loan for an MCA and had already repaid Rs 2 lakh in eight months. The user explained that despite earning Rs 30,000 in hand, they were paying Rs 25,000 every month and hoped to clear the remaining amount by March.

Another Reddit user congratulated him and asked about his job. The youth replied that he works as a “Data and ML engineer.”
