Job security has become a fragile concept nowadays. The world is fiercely competitive and surviving in this corporate field is a challenge. Despite working endlessly, meeting deadlines, juggling hectic schedules and sacrificing your personal hobbies, you never really know when might be your last day at the company. Something similar happened to a senior lead at an organisation when he was laid off by the same organisation he had dedicated 8 years to. The incident shared by an employee working under him highlights the harsh reality of today’s job market.

Dedicated to company for 8 years but still fired

Data analyst Banji Alo recently dropped a post on X where he recounted the fateful day when his boss was fired from the company, without any prior warning. His post is a reminder to always put your well-being first, rather than tying your identity and self-worth entirely to a job that may not offer the same loyalty in return.

As per Banji Alo, his former manager had spent eight years with the same company. On one random weekday, he walked into the office to perform his usual duties when things took a turn for the worse. He was called into an HR meeting and was informed that his role had been made redundant, effective immediately. As per Banji, the decision was simply out of the blue.

Key takeaway from sudden lay off

Banji Alo added that his boss’s layoff came as a shock because he was the kind of employee who put his blood and sweat into work, stayed back past midnight, put in extra hours and even compromised weekends, prioritising the company above everything else. The news left the boss so disappointed that he handed over his laptop and access card without saying a word, before leaving the office, even before the end of the workday.

Through his post, Banji Alo urged employees to understand that companies operate according to their own interests. So, while commitment and hard work are important, it is equally crucial for individuals to look out for themselves and not lose sight of their own well-being.
