Recounting an experience from Norway, he described how his boss reacted after he worked during his time off, highlighting a workplace culture that prioritises boundaries, rest and work-life balance over constant availability and overwork.

Hard-working employee gets emotional lesson

As per the post, Vinod moved to Norway 15 years ago, carrying with him what he described as a typical Indian work ethic. He regularly worked on weekends, skipped lunch breaks, stayed late at the office and pushed himself to keep working even when he was unwell. At the time, he believed these habits reflected commitment and professionalism. However, one incident during his early days in Norway completely changed his perspective on work culture.



Vinod recalled being called into his boss’s office after responding to a work email on a Saturday and cancelling a planned vacation to complete a project. Expecting appreciation for his dedication, he was instead met with concern. His boss pointed out that replying to emails during the weekend and sacrificing leave without informing anyone was uncceptable, as an employee deserves to rest and take a break.

According to Vinod, the boss stressed that vacations were mandatory and should not be skipped. He also explained that junior employees often look up to senior colleagues and that normalising overwork could send the wrong message about what dedication and success should look like in the workplace.

The conversation left Vinod stunned. He admitted that had the same incident occurred in India, he might have been praised as a highly dedicated employee. In Norway, however, his actions were viewed as unhealthy and potentially harmful to workplace culture.
