CA reacts to wedding
The Chartered Accountant, Meenal Goel, referred to the post where a man explained his family’s financial situation and the decision his father was considering for his sister’s marriage. The core concern raised was about whether long-term family assets should be used for short-term social expectations.Reacting to it, she wrote, “A family is ready to sell land built through generations of hard work…for a 2-day wedding.”
She further pointed out that the decision is not always about real affordability but about social comparison, adding, “Not because they can afford it, because they want to 'match standards'”.
While acknowledging the emotional side of such choices, she also stressed that emotions alone cannot guide financial decisions. She noted, “The emotions are real. The intentions are pure, But emotions should be supported by financial strength.”
According to her, this often leads to the slow erosion of family savings and assets. She explained, “Land gets sold. Savings disappear. Gold gets exhausted.”
The outcome, she suggested, is largely driven by social perception rather than financial logic. She added, “All so guests can say: “Shaadi bahut grand thi.””
Summing up her concern, she wrote, “2 days of social respect, traded for years of family wealth creation.” She also concluded with a direct reflection on priorities, “A wedding should celebrate a family. Not financially weaken one.”
The post that sparked the discussion
The post referenced by the CA described a man from a farming background explaining his family’s situation in detail. He shared that their family owns around 20 acres of land and depends on it for livelihood. The person also explained that the family had already faced financial pressure earlier when supporting education. He added, “My dad fully paid for her MBBS, and at that time, he sold one acre of land to cover her medical education fees and with the remaining money, he built our house.”
It also highlighted the estimated cost burden, saying, “He wants to sell another piece of land for the wedding because the total expenses are expected to cross 1.4 crore (with around 80 lakh from our side and 60 lakh from groom, ours is more because of more gold).”
