Imtiaz Ali has directed two iconic RK films - Rockstar and Tamasha
Today, he is one of India’s most celebrated film-makers. However, success did not come easy to Imtiaz Ali. A post from positivity portal The Better India recently shared his inspiring journey. The Jab We Met director once failed class 9.

Born in Jamshedpur, Imtiaz Ali struggled with his studies, and eventually failed class 9. In an earlier interview, he admitted that he was terrified that people would laugh at him. Gradually, he changed his approach to studies.

Instead of memorising, he focused on understanding. Years later, he gained admission to Delhi University. The boy who once failed class 9, excelled in studies there, topping exams. He also found his calling - telling stories.


Ali wrote and performed street plays and stage productions while at Hindu College. During his time in college, he displayed a strong passion for theatre and took the initiative to establish Ibtida, the institution's dramatics society, creating a platform for students to explore and showcase their acting talents. The group went on to become an important part of the college's cultural activities and helped nurture numerous aspiring performers. He started his career in television, directing TV programmes such as Imtihaan for Doordarshan and Kurukshetra for Zee TV. He mad his directorial debut with the 2007 film Socha Na Tha. It was a box-office flop, but over the years became a cult hit.

His breakthrough came with the 2007 romantic comedy Jab We Met starring Kareena Kapoor Khan and Shahid Kapoor. He then went on to direct several iconic films including three timeless Ranbir Kapoor films Rockstar and Tamasha.

Recently, he helmed the romantic drama film Main Vaapas Aunga. Starring Sharvari and Vedang Raina. Set in undivided Punjab, the film narrates the doomed love story between a pair of star-crossed lovers Ishar and Jiya. The blossoming relationship between the two is suddenly torn apart by the turmoil of the 1947 Partition.
