He could easily afford a 2BHK but chose to rent. 2 years later, a sudden incident made him realise the true cost of rental houses
A techie's housing experience has reignited the long-running debate over renting versus buying a home after an investor shared how the employee, despite being able to afford a 2BHK, chose to rent instead. After living in the same flat for over two...

Aditya Kondawar, Partner & Vice President at Complete Circle Capital, shared the story in a post on X. According to him, the techie had rented a flat even though "He can easily buy a 2 BHK in a good area" and ignored advice from both his parents and friends to purchase a home instead.
Asked to vacate after more than two years
Kondawar said the tenant had lived in the apartment for two years and maintained a good relationship with the landlord. However, only four months into the third year of the rental agreement, things changed unexpectedly.Sharing what happened, he wrote, "He was renting the flat for 2 years and had good relationship with owner. Just 4 months into the 3rd year of agreement, his owner has asked him to vacate within 15 days because he wants to sell out."
He further added, "Now he has to manage office, his shifting and find a new flat in this crazy rains."
Based on the experience, Kondawar concluded with his personal opinion: "Don't listen to any finfluencer, if you can please buy your own property, instead of paying rent Pay EMI - My personal take :)"
Social media users remain divided
The post triggered a lively discussion, with users expressing different views on the renting-versus-buying debate. Many agreed that owning a home offers a sense of stability that renting cannot always guarantee. One user commented, "A home is more than just an investment—it's also about stability and peace of mind." The commenter added that if an EMI is comfortably affordable and fits a person's long-term plans, buying a home can be a good decision because financial choices should be based on individual circumstances rather than general advice.Others also supported home ownership. One user wrote, "Rent buys you a landlord's peace of mind. EMI buys you yours." Another said owning a home brings "a different kind of peace" and advised people not to blindly follow financial influencers.
However, several users disagreed with Kondawar's conclusion. Some argued that rental agreements generally include a notice period of around 30 days before tenants are asked to vacate, while others said shifting homes is a practical reality for renters and should not be used as the main reason to buy property. A section of users also pointed out that owning a home in expensive cities can reduce flexibility for people who may relocate for better career opportunities. Others felt that investments such as SIPs, mutual funds and gold may offer better financial returns than putting a large amount of money into real estate.
