While many people remember Yo Yo Honey Singh when they think of the hit song Angreji Beat, it was Punjabi star Gippy Grewal who lent his voice as the lead vocalist. Honey Singh composed, produced and performed the rap portions, while Gippy's vocals played a key role in making the track a massive success. Today, Gippy is one of the biggest names in Punjabi entertainment and is gearing up for the release of Carry On Jatta 4, directed by Smeep Kang and co-starring Sargun Mehta and Binnu Dhillon. The film is set to arrive in theatres on June 26. Ahead of the release, the actor-singer recently opened up about the difficult journey that brought him to stardom.

Failed albums and borrowed money

In a recent conversation with Bharti TV, Gippy spoke about his early struggles and revealed that success did not come easily. Coming from a farming family, he had to borrow money to finance his first music album. Unfortunately, the album failed to make an impact. His second album also did not perform well.

However, Gippy did not give up. After moving to Canada with his wife, Ravneet Kaur, he decided to try again and released a third album. That decision eventually changed his life.

According to the singer, one song from the album, Phulkari, unexpectedly became a huge success. Recalling that phase, Gippy said the track started playing at weddings everywhere and became his first major hit. He credited the song with turning his fortunes around and opening doors in the music industry.

A hit song but no money

Despite Phulkari becoming popular, Gippy said the success did not immediately translate into financial stability. While the song was widely played in Canada and India, he still needed a regular job to support his family.

The singer shared, "I used to work as a security guard back then. Even though my song was a hit, I had to make money to survive and for my family. I knew that until I have a high income as a performer or singer, I needed to work to pay the bills."

One of his duties involved guarding a closed factory overnight. He had to inspect the premises every few hours and report that everything was secure. Gippy recalled with humour that his English was limited at the time and even memorising the required reporting line took considerable effort.

Gippy praises his wife for her support

Gippy also spoke about the sacrifices made by his wife, Ravneet. According to him, she worked long hours at Subway before taking up a second job as a security guard. It was through her workplace that he eventually found a similar job.

The couple's routine was exhausting. After completing his security shift at around 4 am, Gippy would pick up his wife and the two would head out to deliver newspapers for the next couple of hours.

Looking back, he said they treated those newspaper rounds as quality time together. The couple would spend the journey talking to each other while completing their work.

The struggle did not end there. Gippy revealed that he took on several odd jobs to earn extra money. He and his wife also worked at a shopping mall, where she cleared trays from the food court while he handled cleaning duties.

The actor-singer said he did everything that was required, including sweeping floors and cleaning toilets. He recalled that the mall cleaning job paid better than some of his other work, earning him about 13 Canadian dollars (Rs 1230) compared to around 8 dollars elsewhere.

"In other jobs, I would make 8 dollars, but in the mall cleaning job, I would get almost 13 dollars. Like with the newspapers, my wife and I would think that this is our time together. So we would keep talking the whole time and get done with that job in two hours."

According to Gippy, these jobs may sound unusual to people in India, but they were simply necessary responsibilities for building a stable life in Canada.

Years later, Gippy Grewal's story has become one of Punjabi entertainment's biggest success stories. Apart from music, he has established himself as a successful actor, producer and filmmaker. He is married to Ravneet Kaur, and the couple are parents to three sons, Ekom, Shinda and Gurbaaz Grewal.

According to a recent report by PTC Punjabi, Gippy's estimated net worth in 2026 is reportedly between Rs 120 crore and Rs 150 crore. His wealth comes from multiple sources, including music, films, production ventures, brand endorsements and live performances.

Besides this, Gippy Grewal recently shared a funny story about his friendship with Bollywood star Aamir Khan. He revealed that there was a time when he would ask friends and colleagues to help him reply to Aamir's text messages because they were written in English. Speaking on Shekhar Tonite with Shekhar Suman, Gippy recalled how a simple interview request from Aamir eventually grew into a close friendship, though he initially found it difficult to keep up with the actor's long English messages.

From cleaning toilets and delivering newspapers in the early hours of the morning to becoming one of Punjab's most bankable stars, Gippy Grewal's journey is a reminder that success often comes after years of persistence and hard work.
