Developer alleges unpaid wages and termination after saving company thousands of hours
Workplace disputes in the tech sector often unfold quietly, but sometimes they spill into public view. A recent post shared on Reddit has drawn attention after a software developer claimed he was fired despite building automation tools that saved his employer thousands of hours of work. The anonymous tech worker described the episode as a harsh lesson in how companies may respond when extra effort is not backed by formal agreements.

In the post, the developer wrote, “I worked as an hourly ecommerce dev for three years and made the classic mistake of being ‘too helpful.’” He explained that during a difficult hiring market, he accepted a lower-level position. Over time, he used his spare hours to create custom automation systems that improved workflows and reduced manual effort across the company. According to him, those systems ended up saving thousands of hours.

Extra Work Without Title or Raise

Despite the reported impact of his work, the developer said he did not receive a promotion or salary increase. Instead, he claimed management assigned him more responsibility. He described being treated like a manager in practice, but without any official designation or additional pay.

The situation appeared to change when he was asked to interview a new hire. The candidate, he wrote, could not pass a basic CSV parsing test but was hired anyway because he agreed to work for $16 an hour. Soon after, the company allegedly demanded administrative access to all the private code he had written outside of work hours, code that the business had started relying on. He said this raised concerns that he was being replaced with lower-cost labour while his intellectual property was being absorbed by the company.

Wage Deductions and Labor Complaint

While reviewing his pay stubs, the developer claimed he noticed that 30-minute lunch breaks were automatically deducted from employees’ hours, regardless of whether they actually took those breaks. He contacted the Department of Labor, he wrote, and was informed that he was entitled to compensation for every hour spent coding off the clock.

He stated, “I tried to be reasonable and just asked for a 6-week severance if they ever wanted to move on, which I felt was incredibly reasonable given we are talking over $100k in unpaid wages.” According to him, instead of negotiating, the company cloned his personal Google Drive overnight, revoked his system access, and terminated his employment.

Severance Conditions and Legal Fight

The developer described the severance offer as unacceptable. He said the company proposed two weeks of pay on the condition that he sign a two-year nationwide non-compete agreement, waive all wage claims, and allow full access to his personal devices whenever requested. He refused and later found a lawyer willing to take the case on contingency.

He also alleged that the CEO told the unemployment office he had quit, leading to a months-long appeals process. In addition, he claimed there was an attempt to withhold his retirement funds.

Security Risks Highlighted

Beyond the employment dispute, the tech worker raised concerns about security practices. He wrote that the company’s systems had serious vulnerabilities that management declined to fix due to cost. He further claimed that API keys were not rotated after his departure, potentially exposing sensitive systems. While he stressed he would not misuse access due to personal integrity, he described the situation as worrying given the possible risks to customer data.

The developer said he has since secured a better-paying role elsewhere. Still, he described the entire experience as a brutal reminder of how quickly a working relationship can collapse once a company believes it has extracted all the value it can from an employee.
