MUMBAI: HDFC Bank managing director Aditya Puri is recovering from a cardiac surgery he underwent in Mumbai on February 16, 2016, the bank said in a stock market notice.

"The operation was successful. He is recuperating and is expected to resume work in a few weeks from now,'' the bank said in a filing with the BSE. ``The Board is confident that the operations of the bank will remain unaffected during this period," HDFC Bank said in a notice to the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE).

Puri, a former Citibank executive build HDFC Bank from scratch and is widely credited for the bank's robust asset quality. HDFC Bank is the most valuable bank in terms of price to book and recently overtook German giant Deutsche in terms of market capitalization.

On Wednesday, the bank's stocks gained 0.18% to close at Rs 975 a piece on BSE even as the 30-share Sensex rose 0.82%.
