Greying hair is a common phemonomenon in many youth
Worried about spotting white or grey strands while still in your teenage years or before turning twenty? You are far from being the only one facing this concern. According to insights shared by Dr Shraddhey Katiyar on social media, premature greying is appearing much earlier than it once did. While many assume it is purely hereditary, the reality is that daily habits and health patterns often play a major role.

Family history does matter. If parents or grandparents experienced early greying, the biological timer may be set sooner. This remains the most powerful contributor and, unfortunately, cannot be undone. However, genetics alone does not explain the growing number of young people noticing pigment loss.

Deficiencies in key nutrients are another major trigger. Low levels of vitamin B12, iron, copper, or zinc directly interfere with melanin formation in hair follicles. Without adequate melanin, hair gradually loses its natural colour.

Long-term stress is equally damaging. Persistent psychological pressure elevates cortisol levels, which gradually depletes melanocyte stem cells. Once these pigment-producing cells are exhausted, colour restoration becomes extremely difficult.

Sleep habits also influence hair pigmentation. Irregular schedules and late nights disturb melatonin secretion, a hormone that protects pigment cells. Many teenagers today operate under chronic sleep deprivation, unknowingly accelerating greying.

Diet quality further compounds the issue. Meals dominated by sugar, processed foods, and refined oils lack essential micronutrients and protein. Since hair is not vital for survival, the body prioritises other organs and neglects hair health first.

Hormonal imbalances, particularly involving the thyroid gland, can speed up greying as well. Both underactive and overactive thyroid conditions often go undetected in younger individuals.

In some cases, autoimmune disorders such as vitiligo or autoimmune thyroid disease may be involved, especially when greying appears suddenly or in patches. Smoking and vaping also play a clear role by creating intense oxidative stress that hastens cellular ageing.

An important clarification is that pulling out white strands does not cause more to appear. However, once pigment cells are lost, reversing the process is extremely challenging.

What truly helps is identifying the root cause. Rapid greying warrants checking vitamin B12 levels, iron stores, and thyroid function. Eating wholesome, protein-rich foods, prioritising quality sleep, and actively reducing stress exposure are far more effective than relying on supplements alone.

White hair in teenagers is often a warning sign rather than a simple cosmetic concern. Ignoring it for too long may invite deeper health issues later on.
