What happened to Nicolas Cage's $10.5 million Malibu mansion?
Cage’s life changed when a giant sinkhole opened up on his beachfront property in September of 2026. The damage to the property was considerable, with the driveway collapsing due to the effects of heavy rainfall and severe coastal erosion. The sinkhole opened up on September 8, sucking the driveway’s ground under and creeping toward the mansion. Photos from the scene showed a large chunk of asphalt and concrete falling in, as well as construction equipment and other debris.
The property was reportedly purchased by Cage in 2024 for $10.5 million. The four-storey oceanfront residence was among the properties affected by the dangerous conditions along Sea Level Drive.
The damage also affected essential infrastructure in the neighbourhood. Water and gas lines were reportedly broken, while the Southern California Gas Company shut off the gas supply to the affected area.
Neighbours also forced to leave their homes
The incident was not limited to Cage's property. Authorities issued evacuation orders for nearby residences after the expanding sinkhole raised concerns about public safety and access to emergency services.According to reports, 31 properties were affected by the situation, with several homes declared unsafe for occupancy. The City of Malibu also declared a local emergency, explaining that the collapse of a beachfront driveway had extended into the roadway, restricting access for residents and emergency personnel.
A temporary shelter was established at Malibu High School by the American Red Cross to assist people displaced by the incident.
