Time flies, and how!
ChatGPT - a large language model developed by OpenAI - turned a year old on Thursday. It was exactly a year ago, on November 30, 2022, that ChatGPT came to life, and went on to upend the world of tech, causing a major disruption, keenly watched by tech geeks and users alike. Today it has become the fastest app to cross 100 million users.
Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI (and a man who has made much news in November thanks to all the corporate shenanigans being played out over his ouster and subsequent reinstatement), was one of the first ones to wish the bot on its first birthday.
A seemingly overwhelmed Altman, in his tweet, introspected on the year gone by.
As soon as he tweeted, users shared their thoughts on the tool having become a part of their lives. Responses ranged from being "unreal" and "made my life interesting" to "a high school student wrote the term paper".
Also known as Chat Generative Pre-Trained Transformer, ChatGPT was created on GPT - 3.5, a language model developed by OpenAI. The early model of ChatGPT was exclusively used for research purposes.
Since its launch in November 2022, ChatGPT has demonstrated the immense potential of large language models (LLMs). It also sparked doomsday predictions in global job markets, disrupted education systems and drawn millions of users, from big banks to app developers with its ability to generate human-quality text, translate languages, write different kinds of creative content, and answer questions in an informative way.
ChatGPT's popularity peaked thanks to its ability to answer user questions with very detailed and concise natural language output. Some, impressed by its language creation and comprehension capabilities, concurred that the chatbot exhibited general intelligence.
